After this weekend I've had similar strange issues with opendns being used to "search" for stuff if the dns entry isn't found.
IMO this is an abuse of the DNS system and just makes existing DNS resolves really slow (it's taking 500ms to a second or two to resolve things sometimes).
Setup a local caching DNS service (like djbdns dnscache) or find the dns service which is resolving to opendns and remove it from your resolv.conf
